Scott will use any appropriate tool to gain the look he's after, here he uses an airbrush for the purpose of softening the shadow.
Using his infamous 7-hair paintbrush, Scott begins the task of blocking in solid areas on the painting. (Why he doesn't use a larger brush, is beyond us?)

The process of slowly adding colors a.k.a. "blocking in" to give the painting depth is a time consuming but necessary task. There just isn't any short cut for this step.
The faces begin to emerge! Welcome Presidents!
Areas requiring a different technique are masked off, so that the section can be isolated. It also protects against any paint splattering on the nearly finished area.
You can see the layers of granite that have been etched into the hillside leaving the scattering of rocks below. Every little extra rock gives the painting that much more depth.
